Building Information Modelling
BSE uses Digital Engineering (DE) extensively through our engineering design and drafting projects, which allows virtual simulation of the project through 3D models and coordinated design components.
BSE’s DE includes simulation, coordination and collaboration for the benefit of the project throughout the entire project lifecycle and can extend beyond this scope if advantageous to the project and wider project team. Specifically, BSE uses Autodesk AEC Collection with supporting products, add-ins and API’s which allows our designers and engineers to work with automated design platform, parametric elements in 3D containing intelligent information such as phase and system type. Our preferred approach, BSE utilises Revit to implement BIM giving a project a greater level of accuracy and coordination, providing longevity and increased utilisation capability for future useability of the model. Projects inevitably run smoother with DE, with advanced collaboration and coordination from the design stage gives on-site teams better information.
When appropriately utilised, BIM provides building owners/ managers with projects of a higher quality, more productive with greater profitability. Carnegie-Mellon University research has indicated that an improvement of just 3.8% in productivity in the functions that occur in a building would totally pay for the facility’s design, construction, operations and sustainment, through increased efficiency. With governments around the world such as UK, Finland, Denmark and Singapore mandating BIM, it will not be long before the Australian Government follows suit. Queensland Government construction projects with a value of $50 million or more are required to use BIM from the early planning phase. A new analysis from McGraw-Hill Construction, shows that BIM adoption in the US expanded from 17% in 2007 to 71% in 2012, “demonstrating impressive growth despite the recent economic pressures”. BSE is passionate about applying BIM principles to every project. Our adoption of Autodesk Revit® and Navisworks® software on every project provides instant value to each building.
At BSE we take the ‘I’ & ‘M’ in BIM seriously. By adopting our 100% Revit policy, we can leverage the powerful Revit MEP® analytical design tools on every project. We believe that building intelligent information into a model goes a long way towards providing our clients and project stakeholders the best solutions on every project. BSE liaise with facilities management contractors to add further value to a BIM Model by integrating the 3D data into procurement and operation. At BSE, we make this commitment and see BIM as the future. Using BIM, we add value to our engineering services and to the building life cycle. By detecting and eliminating problems in the virtual construction of projects, costly rework is eliminated and savings made in the project cost. Our specific approach to BIM has been utilised for a confidential data centre build in Canberra, which is being built with a fully Revit designed and coordinated BIM Model, driven by our client’s vision. BSE has delivered hundreds of small and medium sized projects using Revit around Australia in 2018.
BIM to BSE means delivering a coordinated services model in conjunction with the architectural and structural model. BSE utilises the REVIT platform (2017 to 2020) including BIM 360 Design and believe that the other team members using the same platforms and versions provide significant value to the project and building. BSE’s BIM Leaders are thoroughly trained, competent and capable of using BIM real-time issue tracking software using Revizto or BIM Track. Once our team members have undertaken the specific site visit and obtained the necessary site information, BSE’s design is developed in the REVIT model and coordinated.
BSE’s design team can add the most value to projects using latest Virtual Reality simulation technology. When it comes to the Virtual Reality, BSE has the experience of preparation, installation and application of Virtual Reality tools using HTC VIVE and Revit Live. We have used the technology to present VR for management using the latest technology.

BSE’s BIM methodology ensures the fulfilment of the requirements of the project brief and that the delivered services are to the total satisfaction of our client.
To ensure the integrity of our advice and documentation, and to ensure program timelines are achieved, BSE implements the following approach for every BIM project:
A BSE BIM Leader is nominated who is responsible for client liaison and is actively involved for the project duration to oversee 3D model quality, timely delivery and budgets awareness
BIM Leader will be responsible for preparation of BIM Execution Plan, project setup and coordination of all aspects of the project, ensuring that internal communication is maintained, and it is coordinated with other project parties and project requirements
Our delivery processes are geared towards ensuring all project requirements are met in accordance with our procedures as per our Quality Management System
To maintain quality on each project, BSE implements stringent internal Revit templates and procedures to setup and manage Revit 3D Models
Automatic clash detection and BIM real-time issue tracking software using Revizto or BIM Track will be setup for the projects if required
BIM Leader coordinates the modelling and reports the summary of remaining issues to BSE’s Project Leader
BSE works closely with the entire design team to ensure that programme requirements are met, and project team members maintain a direct line of communication and collaboration with BSE. To assist with delivery and ensure that team is working towards the same goals, BSE conduct the following BIM coordination meetings:
Internal BIM coordination meetings – the BSE project team hold formal regular scheduled internal coordination meetings to discuss clash detection issues and solutions to ensure all team members are kept informed
Project BIM coordination meetings – the complete team including different parties meet each week to discuss the progress of resolved issues BSE track all deliverables required to fulfil the project programme milestone dates Any potential project bottle necks are identified and, where project deliverables coincide, the BIM Leader will report it to the client

BSE has developed our BIM consulting and modelling solutions, recognising that BIM is integral to the process of design, construction and management. After developing our BSE Revit Add-In and Updater using C# and Visual Studio to automate design and drafting process, we achieved the best efficiency of design and drafting using Revit. We utilise BIM 360 Design to collaborate with other parties of the project to achieve the best performance and efficiency.
BSE have been working in 3D for engineering services since 2011 where we implemented a complete changeover from 2D design. Our design teams now work entirely in 3D for all projects.
All BSE’s engineers design directly in Revit in combined services model, ensuring all our engineers can examine the model and have a clear understanding of the other services and coordinate simply at the documentation stage.
BSE has a dedicated full-time development team creating parametric families of objects and researching integration into Revit.
