We’re back with our Touch base with TeamBSE series, this year focusing on our leaders and national team.
Meet Orlando Cavuoto, SA Regional Manager.
In fast paced couple of years, Orlando has grown our Adelaide office into a consistent and talented consultancy, a reputation for fit for purpose designs that meet clients’ requirements and are practical to build! Orlando’s experience across property and construction and exceptional network allow him and the Adelaide team to properly partner with clients for phenomenal outcomes.
1. What is your background story?
I originally started mechanical engineering to work in F1, race cars was the dream! While studying, I joined a V8 Supercar team as a graduate and it was great to combine work with a hobby, even if the work wasn’t exactly what was expected. With lots of time and travel needed, moving from family wasn’t appealing overall. S
So switched to consultancy and finished my degree. Consultancy was interesting, provided the opportunity to work on different projects, different systems and build relationships with builders, clients, suppliers and I was able to meet a huge range of people! Eventually I transitioned to client side project management, development management then facilities management within SA, which was a great expansion on what I already knew – working on the other side of the process, understanding the broad challenges and being able to provide solutions as a client. When the opportunity came up to join and develop BSE in Adelaide, it was exciting to be able to expand a successful brand into a new region. Over the last couple of years, we’ve tripled revenue, grown into a larger space, have a full team of engineers based in Adelaide and are doing consistent work with a good client base, looking at projects we couldn’t have done 2 years ago.
2. Did you choose engineering, or did it choose you?
Bit of both, maths and science skills were a good fit for engineering, personally and technically. While outcomes might not be on a single focus of an F1 car and winning championships, services consultancy provides the opportunity to design solutions across a range of projects that are really practical and tangible.
3. How do you feel services engineers add value to projects?
Consider it from the alternative of not having an engineer. Without a services engineer, a project doesn’t have specific, necessary parts of a building or space. Engineers also have direct contacts with authorities, suppliers and a detailed understanding of the codes. When a good services engineer is on a project, clients can know that the detail is being taken care of, no leaving construction to chance. Documenting an engineering solution eliminates a lot of risk and increases the opportunity of success, through cost saving, more certainty and better use of time – both during construction and throughout building lifecycle.
4. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Enthusiastic kids is the real answer. Professional answer – the healthy competition of our industry, making contacts, nurturing existing relationships and having details and information that’s helpful to project outcomes for our partners.
5. Pineapple on pizza: yes or no?
No, absolutely not.
