We spend a lot of time talking about how services are an essential part of building design and operation, in this series we are taking intentional look at what exactly services are.
To kick off this new series, mechanical services.
Mechanical services are the systems and equipment that provide heating, cooling, and ventilation to a building or space. Our team of Engineers design solutions to provide comfort to the users of the space by controlling the temperature, humidity, and velocity with fresh air, while also filtering and extracting used air, and exhaust toxic or hazardous fumes.
If this sounds technical, that’s because it is. We might easily consider our own homes when thinking of air conditioning, maybe a split system unit on a wall pumping cool air in during summer and warm air during winter. Consider this approach for a larger space like a shopping center, movie theatre or commercial building. Mechanical systems provide air distribution and filtration, heating, and cooling to the specific and often unique aspects of the building or space. In larger or complex spaces, comfort levels are usually controlled through sensor inputs into the building management system thorough individually regulated zones. Smaller or self-contained spaces might even be controlled by the in-room systems such as split systems we’re so used to seeing.
As part of the collaborative design process, our Engineers consider architectural design factors like building direction and windows, client and project partner priorities, budget allowances, efficiency, and sustainability to align the need for occupant comfort, design intent with operational considerations.
