Michael is a cheerful and bright person to have as part of our Melbourne team. As an electrical engineer with a strong background in design and maintenance, across project and building lifecycles, Michael is a huge asset to all of our projects.
Q&A –
1. What excites you about your area of engineering?
It might sound very cliché, but engineering can change the world. Every project is different, with pieces of a puzzle to put together and solve the picture. I find it helpful to think of the whole picture, the full puzzle, not just the single piece in front of me. Plus, engineering gives so much space for continual improvement and growing of my industry knowledge.
2. How do services engineers add value to projects?
I’m sure everyone is answering this in a pretty similar way, but services are such an essential part of a building – with the basics of lighting, power and data. In 2021, it’s inconceivable to imagine a building or a space without these things. Services engineering is a fundamental requirement of projects, and unfortunately, it’s usually only when they’ve been designed or installed badly does your attention get drawn to them.
3. Did you choose the property/ construction industry as an intentional career choice, or did it choose you?
It chose me! Even with an electrical degree, the inherent knowledge directed me to more industrial and automation opportunities, PLC, programming, control, that didn’t have a direct or real applications where I was. Wanting to grow and gain more knowledge, I followed the jobs, and was able to leverage the generalist knowledge into services design. And I’ve loved it ever since. Being part of the building and construction process, seeing the buildings come alive, the translation of a design to an actual building that will be used by people daily is so amazing.
To end on a lighter note, we’re asking all our team the most controversial question of recent time:
4. Pineapple on pizza?
Of course, yes. As engineers, we love trying new things and a new approach, pineapple on pizza is really about innovation.
