Touch Base with TeamBSE – David Luck

We’re back with our Touch base with TeamBSE series, this year focusing on our leaders and national team.

Meet David Luck, Acoustics Team Lead & Associate.

With more than 20 years of experience across an impressive range of industry sectors, early on David pivoted from environmental science to noise engineering to provide practical solutions to improve the work and life of people. David’s extensive project design experience provides solutions from single room sound-assessments and full tenancy design to construction site and infrastructure. .

1.  What is your background story?

Acoustics is one of the great cross-over disciplines in building services consulting.  Growing up, I was supported, and challenged by my older sister and we both chose to study science. My father was a tradesman, so talking to builders always came naturally. Enquiring minds were always encouraged in our family.

Acoustics wasn’t taught in my hometown, so I chose environmental science and after completing studies, moved to Sydney.   After some helpful peer guidance, I took an opportunity in acoustics and things just grew from there. Convinced I had now grown into an exciting field, I did a post-graduate course in noise and vibration. This leveraged my existing environmental science knowledge into a whole new approach.  This also ensured I had the technical knowledge and how to apply it practically in building acoustics.

Being solution focused, researching an issue, and finding practical solutions have become an exciting part of my lead role in acoustics. Upon reflection, science gave the rigour and methodology, but engineering provided the solutions.

2.  Did you choose engineering, or did it choose you?

Engineering definitely chose me. I’m so glad it did, engineering is the practical approach to solutions, and applying knowledge to problems.

3.  How do you feel services engineers add value to projects?

Buildings mean a lot of things to a lot of people; they are the places we spend a lot of our time. A poor environment can easily degrade our wellbeing in life and work. So as services engineers, our value add is to enrich people’s day to day. Particularly noise (too much or too little), is an aspect of a space that can negatively impact users so easily. Whereas a well designed and built facility creates such good outcomes for occupants. From an acoustic perspective particularly, our value add is a great result for the people using the space, practical outcomes, ability to improve spaces for people to live and work.

4. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Double-strength coffee and the opportunity to mentor and inspire the people around me. Working as the lead acoustician in all BSE Offices has been an amazing experience.

5. Pineapple on pizza: yes or no?

Aussie pizza – yes. Italian pizza – absolutely not.
